9. Buffalo Bills (6-10)
RB C.J. Spiller (Clemson)
This was the surprise of the draft here. With Jimmy Clausen on the board still, the Bills draft the big play-maker C.J. Spiller in order to add a little excitement and ability onto this offense.
Why he's good for the Bills:
The Bills are in need of the home run threat, and Spiller is the biggest one on the board. Think RB Chris Johnson for the Tennessee Titans and you will understand why they took this leap.
9. Buffalo Bills (6-10)
Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame)
This draft couldn't work out any better for the Buffalo Bills, who desperately were in need of a franchise quarterback. In Jimmy Clausen, they get just that. Clausen, by far, has had the most experience in a pro-style offense, and instantly becomes no. 1 on the Bills depth chart. With three years of experience in the pro-style offense, and a great quarterbacks coach, I feel Clausen may be the most NFL-ready of this years class. With franchise quarterback out of the way, look for the Bills to next address a weak offensive line.
Why he's good for the Bills:
Besides the obvious reasons stated above, the Bills are in desperate need of someone to get the ball to their play-maker WR Lee Evans. The Bills' passing offense ranked 30th in the league in 2009, finishing with 157 yards per game through the air. With Clausen, the Bills a great leader and great signal caller.
9. Sam Bradford, QB
Buffalo Bills(6-10)
For years, Buffalo has gone without a premier QB and with the studs going before them, a QB finally falls into their laps. Because of durability issues, I believe he will be the second QB drafted even though he could be the best quarterback in this draft class. On his way to the Heisman Award in 2008, Bradford showed tremendous accuracy and poise as he passed for over 4,700 yards and 50 touchdowns. He has an above average arm and his accuracy allows him to make the tough throws. He isn't a burner so he will not blow you away with his speed, but it is enough for him to be somewhat evasive. I believe his best attribute is his ability to read defenses and make the proper throws. He rarely threw into bad coverage and was always able to make quick, accurate decisions.
Why he's good for the Bills:
The Buffalo Bills have good receivers and a great 1-2 punch of RBs Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch. Their main concern must be a franchise QB and quarterbacks like Sam Bradford do not come along every year. They will benefit from being able to ease him into the role of starter and he has shown that he has tremendous ability that should translate well in the NFL.
There are rumblings around the league stating that Buffalo Bills' interim coach, Perry Fewell, will accept the Defensive Coordinator job that has been left vacant by Bill Sheridan. Sheridan, who was a rookie coordinator, was fired last week after a miserable season with the Giants. There was news circulating that if the Bears offered him the job that he would take it, but I've heard that Fewell to the Giants will happen.
From what I've read, Fewell is a great defensive mind... His specialty is the DBs and he demands respect and holds his players accountable for their actions. The difference between his defense and the defense that the Giants have been accustomed to makes me believe we may be changing up a lot of personnel. Fewell is a cover-2 guy, whereas the Giants primarily stick with man coverages and throw in occasional zone blitzes. Obviously under Sheridan that didn't work, and Corey Webster will be the player to watch this coming year because he didn't become the cornerback he is today until Spags had him lining up man-to-man every down instead of zone coverages.
UPDATE: Fewell is still debating whether to take Bears or Giants' job...
