NFL Offseason Schedule

Since there are two months left until actual football is played, I thought it would be a good idea to present a list of Restricted Free Agents that are left out there.  Today is the deadline for old clubs to send tender to unsigned unrestricted free agents to receive exclusive negotiating rights for rest of season if the player is not signed by another club by July 22.  This is also the deadline for old clubs to send tender to their unsigned RFAs or to extend an offer to retain exclusive negotiating rights.  This is what the St. Louis Rams are up against in regards to Safety O.J. Atogwe.  The Rams have been in constant talks with the safety, but if they don't place a high tender or sign him to an extension by midnight, he will become an unrestricted free agent.  

June 1-11 begins all of the Organized Team Activities, while June 15th starts mandatory mini-camps across the NFL.  Late July is when training camps begin, and Preseason starts in August.

28. San Diego Chargers (13-3)

NT Terrance Cody (Alabama)

With the two glaring holes being the NT position and RB, the Chargers go out on a limb and draft Terrance Cody out of Alabama. The reason being that there aren't anymore running backs worthy of 1st round consideration, and a true NT is a very hard position to fill.  Cody, who weighed in at over 370 pounds at the Senior Bowl, worked his way down to under 350 pounds by Alabama Pro Day.  Cody has the sheer size and strength to become a top NT in the league if he continues with this new found work ethic.  He commands double-teams and frees up the other players to make plays.  It will be hard for the Chargers to pass up on a chance to fill the void left by Jamal Williams.

Why he's good for the Chargers:

The Chargers know that Cody is a 2nd round pick, but he won't be there the next time around and they don't want to give away draft picks trading up for him.  Cody is a coach's dream, in that he swallows blockers and constantly demands extra attention from the offense.  Given a good regimen to keep the weight down, he is going to be a key cog in their defense.  

Cromartie Traded to Jets

Antonio Cromartie is on his way out of San Diego, as the New York Jets traded a conditional draft pick for the cornerback.  Cromartie will line up opposite Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis to form a very good cornerback tandem.  Cromartie is set to replace Lito Sheppard, who was released by the Jets this offseason.  

The Jets really wanted to upgrade their secondary, and it will be a 3rd rounder that could become a 2nd rounder if certain conditions are met.  Look for the Chargers to do a lot of work this offseason retooling that team and getting them prepared to make another playoff run.  Cromartie had fallen out of favor with the Chargers, so it was good to get him out of there asap.  I think that Cromartie can have a very good career with the Jets, and look for them to become one of the better defensive secondary in the league.  

Inside the NFL Combine- Part 2

Just a recap of some news happening today at the NFL Combine:

Head Coach Mike Shanahan informed the media that the Washington Redskins will tender an offer to QB Jason Campbell, and that we will find out what value the tender will be next week.  There are different levels that teams can offer tenders at, with the higher tenders receiving higher compensation.  

Sproles will not be Back

Fresh off the release of LaDainian Tomlinson, the San Diego Chargers will not retain the services of Darren Sproles on another one-year contract.  This means the Chargers will be in dire need to replace the services of their top two running backs.  Sproles, who was the Chargers' franchise player last year, was due to earn 110% of what he earned last year since he would become a restricted free agent.  He would be due to make $7.3 million dollars this upcoming season.
